It was the second day of The Big Weave training at Larkmead School today, many hands helped make light work of the weaving and great progress was made.

The Abingdon Tapestry is ready to roll.

Training Day 1 and The Abingdon Tapestry is off to a flying start at Larkmead School. Twelve Year 9 students along with their art teacher, members of the Oxford Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers and two community artists all joined The Big Weave artists to get the tapestry up and running. At the end of the day the loom was warped up, yarn hanks wound into balls, butterflies prepared, the design scaled up and transferred to the loom and the hem woven. An excellent days work and the scene is set to start weaving on the tapestry tomorrow. Some photos from the day shown below.

The Big Weave Comes to Abingdon

The Big Weave is a coming together of artists and community to create a public art project which gives adults and children the opportunity to learn new skills and to participate in the creation of a unique community artwork.

The Big Weave was launched through Maiden Erlegh Community Arts in Reading in July 2009, where a tapestry project was taken out into the community, to teach basic weaving techniques and provide the opportunity for all to weave. Larkmead School is delighted to be teaming up with The Big Weave as part of Abingdon Arts Festival 2011 in order to produce a community tapestry to be permanently displayed, with the kind support of the Town Council, in the Abingdon Guildhall.

The aim is for people of all ages in Abingdon to be able to contribute to the final tapestry when the loom (with tapestry in progress) visits a variety of locations throughout Abingdon Arts Festival.

This tour will include the following sessions open to members of the public (no booking is required, just turn up and join in!):

Monday 21st March Abingdon town centre 9.00am - 4.00pm

Tuesday 22nd March Abingdon Market Place 9.00am - 4.00pm
